Stretcher

A stretcher is a wooden frame used to stretch and secure a canvas. It is typically designed with expandable joints and small wooden wedges (called keys) that allow adjustments to maintain the tension of the canvas over time. The stamp on the top bar is from the manufacturer Lefranc & Cie. The number '18' is written in pencil on three of the tacking edges of the canvas. In fact, the format of the stretcher does not match any standard sizes by Lefranc or contemporary makers. However, the vertical and horizontal bars each correspond separately to measures of different formats listed by Kultorvets Farvehandel (1893) which suggests that the stretcher was assembled of bars from two different standard formats. On the top bar, in blue crayon is incribed 'A4133'. On the crossbar is written in blue crayon 'Hirschsprungs Samling' and 'Kontoret'. On the right-hand bar, also in blue crayon, is written 'Stockholmsgade', whereas a white label on the same bar reads 'D388'.

The position of the painting on the stretcher was shifted c. 6 mm to the left by the non-original, secondary stretching, resulting in a strip of the original, unpainted tacking edge being visible on the front along the right-hand edge, whereas a corresponding width of painted canvas is now found on the left-hand tacking edge.

Ground layer

The ground layer is a preparatory layer applied directly to the support to create a smooth surface for painting. It is typically opaque and monochrome in color, providing a neutral base that influences the subsequent application of paint layers and the final appearance of the painting. The composition of the ground layer varies depending on the type of support and the historical period of the artwork. Hammershøi typically painted on white and industrially primed canvasses.

Underdrawing

Underpainting

The underpainting is an initial layer of paint applied between the underdrawing and the final paint layers, serving as a foundation for the subsequent application of color. It is often executed in a monochrome palette and helps establish the tonal values and final modelling of the composition.

Paint layer

Paint layers are applied over the ground layer and are composed of pigments or colorants mixed with a binding medium. Throughout history, artists have used various binders. In the Middle Ages, egg yolk was commonly used in tempera painting for altar pieces, while during the Renaissance, oil became the preferred medium. In modern times, synthetic binders such as those found in acrylic paints are also widely used. In Hammershøi’s time, artists painted mainly with oil paint. The paint layer forms the visible image of the artwork and is often built up in multiple layers to create effects of color, texture, depth, and transparency.

Short description of structure

A thinly applied paint with a simple stratigraphy, especially in the background and the black dress of the sitter, which consists of a single layer applied on top of the underpaint.

Description of brushwork

Rather short brush strokes were used in the modelling of the facial features, especially in the lighter parts, whereas longer brush strokes are seen in the black dress and the background paint. The brush strokes of the thinly applied paint of the background generally follow the outline of the figure but is in a few places perpendicular where immediately adjoining the head. The contours of the shoulders, especially on the left-hand side, were lightened by scratching in the wet paint. The same applies to the highlight constituting the front edge of the collar on the right-hand side

Width/type of brush
Brushes of varying sizes were used, with smaller round brushes applied in the modelling of the lighter parts of the flesh paint and the white collar, and wider brushes used for the hair, the jacket and the background.
Sequence of application
The black of the hair and the shadows in the face were established initially. Subsequently, the face was modelled from dark to light with the flesh-paint of the lighter parts overlapping the hair, the eyebrows and the shaded areas. The light flesh paint itself was built up by a thin layer of a warm beige followed by strokes of a paler, more greyish beige. Finally, a couple of small highlights were added to the eyelids, the lip and the tip of the nose. The white left-hand side of the collar was completed at a late stage, overlapping the dark paint of the adjacent lapel, the tie and the neck. The paint of the background, likewise, was completed at a late stage, clarifying and defining the outlines of the figure, while the outer contours were lightened in some places.

The signature is positioned at the edge of the background paint just above the sitter's right-hand shoulder.
The paint is stained with dark specks in a pattern corresponding to the canvas weave throughout the composition apart from the light parts of the flesh paint and the white collar.

Varnish

A varnish is sometimes applied as a final transparent layer over the dried paint layer to protect the artwork from dust, dirt, and mechanical damage. In addition to providing protection, varnish saturates the colours and evens out the surface gloss. Over time, this layer may yellow, or degrade. Until the 20th century, it was common practice to varnish oil paintings. In Hammershøi’s time, however, oil paintings were not always varnished, and we know that Hammershøi sometimes deliberately chose to leave his works unvarnished.

On the top bar is a transport label, an exhibition label 1983 from the Vilhelm Hammershøi Exhibition at Wildenstein, New York and The Phillips Collection, Washington, as well as two small labels with the numbers 23 and 149.

With multispectral imaging images of an artwork are captured at different wavelength bands across the electromagnetic spectrum – such as ultraviolet, visible, and infrared light, as well as x-rays. Each band can reveal specific features and uncover or enhance details invisible to the naked eye, offering valuable insights into an artwork – such as the materials used, the presence of underdrawings and hidden layers, alterations made by the artist, and traces of past conservation treatments.

Weave maps

Weave maps are detailed visualisations of the thread patterns in a canvas, created by applying thread counting on high-resolution x-radiographs. These are used for analysing the structure of the canvas and to compare canvases used in different paintings. A comparison between weave maps can sometimes determine if two or more pieces of canvas derive from the same batch and thereby shed light on the place and period in which a painting has been created.

A comprehensive understanding of the materials and techniques used in a painting typically requires the combined application of several analytical methods. Material analysis can provide valuable information about the pigments, colourants, and binding media used in an artwork. Some techniques are non-invasive, i.e. they do not require physical contact with the artwork, while others involve removing a small sample. Elemental analysis using MA-XRF identified pigments, while SEM-EDXS offered insights into the paintings’ ground layers. In selected cases, FORS and FTIR were also employed to identify organic compounds.

MA-XRF

MA-XRF is a method that scans the surface of a painting to produce maps that show the distribution of chemical elements. This method can reveal hidden layers, as well as alterations made by the artist or during past conservation treatments.

Optical microscopy

Optical microscopy uses visible light and lenses to magnify and examine the surface and structure of a painting. When applied to cross sections of paint samples, it allows for detailed observation of a painting’s stratigraphy (layer structure) and pigment particles. It is often employed with various illumination techniques, such as dark field and UV fluorescence, to enhance the analysis. Layer number 1 in the results section below the images refers to the layer at the bottom of the cross section.

SEM-EDXS

SEM-EDXS is a technique that provides highly detailed images at the microscopic level while simultaneously identifying the elemental composition of a sample. It is particularly valuable for studying the stratigraphy of paint cross sections at very fine scales, for the chemical characterisation of pigments, fillers and degradation products, and for detecting trace elements that may indicate very specific materials. Below, the elements listed in parentheses refer to minor elements whose relative abundance is below 10% of the total signal. The F1 map below represents the Pb M line. Strong illumination of the part of the face turned towards the viewer.

Conservation documentation

The painting was surface-cleaned in 1972 followed by the application of a spray varnish with AW2 on top of the existing varnish.

The portrait was commisioned by the portrayed Daniel Jacobson Salter's (1871-1943) cousin Einar Aage Hirschsprung (1869-1909), who was a son of the art collectors Heinrich and Pauline Hirschsprung. Except from the somewhat closed eyelids the portrait very much resembles a photograph of the sitter, cf. Hvidt and Oelsner, 2018, p. 180-181.
