Stretcher

A stretcher is a wooden frame used to stretch and secure a canvas. It is typically designed with expandable joints and small wooden wedges (called keys) that allow adjustments to maintain the tension of the canvas over time. This helps prevent sagging as the canvas responds to aging or changes in humidity. In contrast, a strainer is a similar wooden frame but non-expandable, meaning it cannot be adjusted once the canvas is mounted.

The description is based on a b/w photograph of the original stretcher, which was replaced by a new one in connection with the lining treatment in 1973. According to the conservation report, the original format was 42 x 31,5 cm. The old stretcher carried stamps from exhibitions in 1919 and 1955, respectively.

the current stretching was carried out after the lining treatment in 1973. According to the conservation report, the canvas was glued to the earlier stretcher, however, the presence of nail holes on the tacking edges suggest that the canvas was also fastened with nails.

Ground layer

The ground layer is a preparatory layer applied directly to the support to create a smooth surface for painting. It is typically opaque and monochrome in color, providing a neutral base that influences the subsequent application of paint layers and the final appearance of the painting. The composition of the ground layer varies depending on the type of support and the historical period of the artwork. Hammershøi typically painted on white and industrially primed canvasses.

Underdrawing

Underpainting

The underpaint is probably in part identical with the paint of the underlying composition which was utilized in the creation of the current image.

Paint layer

Paint layers are applied over the ground layer and are composed of pigments or colorants mixed with a binding medium. Throughout history, artists have used various binders. In the Middle Ages, egg yolk was commonly used in tempera painting for altar pieces, while during the Renaissance, oil became the preferred medium. In modern times, synthetic binders such as those found in acrylic paints are also widely used. In Hammershøi’s time, artists painted mainly with oil paint. The paint layer forms the visible image of the artwork and is often built up in multiple layers to create effects of color, texture, depth, and transparency.

Description of brushwork

The brushwork is generally distinct, but is rather open and loose, particularly in the background paint, leaving the underlying darker paint discernible. The direction of the brush strokes is varying, generally following the shape in the head of the figure, whereas the predominant orientationn of the strokes in the background paint is vertical.

Brushes of varying sizes were used, with finer brushes used for the head and hand of the figure, and wider brushes for the dress and the background paint.
Sequence of application
The black paint at the outlines of the shoulders, the ruff at the neck and the bow at the right-hand side, overlaps the background paint. In other places the sequence is vice versa, indicating a dynamic process in finalizing the outlines of the figure. The hand and the sofa was applied on top of the dark (under)paint which is continuous with the black of the dress.
Surface texture
The surface is characterized by a moderate but distinct impasto. Some main lines of the underlying composition are visible in the surface texture.

Black in the dress, dark and medium shades of brown in the hair. Pale beige, purple, blueish purple, pink, brownish red and yellow ochre in the flesh paint. Pale greyish yellow in the background paint.
Corrections
The outlines of the figure were adjusted along the right-hand side of the hair, the lower left-hand side of the face and the left-hand side at the junction between neck and shoulder.
UV fluorescence
A few scattered brush strokes show a whitish flourescence in the right-hand side of the background.
Comments

The tonality of some colours may be affected by the materials in the wax-resin lining as well as the surface coating.

Varnish

A varnish is sometimes applied as a final transparent layer over the dried paint layer to protect the artwork from dust, dirt, and mechanical damage. In addition to providing protection, varnish saturates the colours and evens out the surface gloss. Over time, this layer may yellow, or degrade. Until the 20th century, it was common practice to varnish oil paintings. In Hammershøi’s time, however, oil paintings were not always varnished, and we know that Hammershøi sometimes deliberately chose to leave his works unvarnished.

Weave maps

Weave maps are detailed visualisations of the thread patterns in a canvas, created by applying thread counting on high-resolution x-radiographs. These are used for analysing the structure of the canvas and to compare canvases used in different paintings. A comparison between weave maps can sometimes determine if two or more pieces of canvas derive from the same batch and thereby shed light on the place and period in which a painting has been created.

A comprehensive understanding of the materials and techniques used in a painting typically requires the combined application of several analytical methods. Material analysis can provide valuable information about the pigments, colourants, and binding media used in an artwork. Some techniques are non-invasive, i.e. they do not require physical contact with the artwork, while others involve removing a small sample. Elemental analysis using MA-XRF identified pigments, while SEM-EDXS offered insights into the paintings’ ground layers. In selected cases, FORS and FTIR were also employed to identify organic compounds.

MA-XRF

MA-XRF is a method that scans the surface of a painting to produce maps that show the distribution of chemical elements. This method can reveal hidden layers, as well as alterations made by the artist or during past conservation treatments.

Optical microscopy

Optical microscopy uses visible light and lenses to magnify and examine the surface and structure of a painting. When applied to cross sections of paint samples, it allows for detailed observation of a painting’s stratigraphy (layer structure) and pigment particles. It is often employed with various illumination techniques, such as dark field and UV fluorescence, to enhance the analysis. Layer number 1 in the results section below the images refers to the layer at the bottom of the cross section.

SEM-EDXS

SEM-EDXS is a technique that provides highly detailed images at the microscopic level while simultaneously identifying the elemental composition of a sample. It is particularly valuable for studying the stratigraphy of paint cross sections at very fine scales, for the chemical characterisation of pigments, fillers and degradation products, and for detecting trace elements that may indicate very specific materials. Below, the elements listed in parentheses refer to minor elements whose relative abundance is below 10% of the total signal. The F1 map below represents the Pb M line. In Bramsen (1918) described as follows:
PORTRÆT. Fru Th. B….. Bryst-Billede med højre Haand. Forarbejde til det forsvundne Billede Nr. 158. En yngre, helt sortklædt, Dame siddende, omtrent en face. Hovedet en Kende drejet mod venstre, højre Arm støttende mod Sofaens Sidestykke. Fra Hals-Partiet tilhøjre hænger en Lorgnet-Snor ned over Brystet.
(Transl.): PORTRAIT. Mrs Th. B….. Half-length portrait with the right hand. Preliminary work for the vanished painting No. 158. A young lady, all in black, seated, almost en face. The head turned a trifle towards the left, the right arm supported against the side of the sofa. From the neck region on the right a lorgnette string is hanging down the chest

Conservation documentation

The painting was wax-resin lined in 1973 after acquisition by SMK. According to the conservation report, at the time of treatment the canvas was attahed to its former stretcher with a glue.

According to Henrik Wivel the sitter, Anne Victoria (Thora) Bendix née Sundberg (1863-1942), was married to the musician Fritz Emil Bendix, who was one of Hammershøis acquaintances from the world of music, cf. Henrik Wivel, "Hammershøi i Davids Samling", 2017, p. 66. According to Bramsen (1918) two studies existed related to the portrait of Thora Bendix , (Bramsen (1918) Nos. 159 + 160). The final painting was considered by Bramsen to have been destroyed (Bramsen (1918) no. 158). One of the preliminary studies of the sitter is in the David Collection, Inv. No. B317 and survey number 160.

The painting was acquired by SMK 1971 at Bruun-Rasmussen Auctions.

Comments

The painting was commissioned by the husband of the sitter Thora Bendix, musician Fritz Emil Bendix, whom Hammershøi met in the circle around Alfred Bramsen and his family.
