Stretcher

A stretcher is a wooden frame used to stretch and secure a canvas. It is typically designed with expandable joints and small wooden wedges (called keys) that allow adjustments to maintain the tension of the canvas over time. This helps prevent sagging as the canvas responds to aging or changes in humidity. In contrast, a strainer is a similar wooden frame but non-expandable, meaning it cannot be adjusted once the canvas is mounted.

Remnants of newspaper with black print on the reverse of the stretcher bars, continuing underneath the canvas on the top bar, suggest that the stretcher may have been applied earlier to another canvas or intended for different painting. A label with the wording 'Selvportræt malt i 1889. V. Hammershøi', which is covering an earlier label, suggests the same.

Ground layer

The ground layer is a preparatory layer applied directly to the support to create a smooth surface for painting. The ground is very thin. A brown layer, which may be identified as an imprimitura, is seen along the borders of the tacking edges and at the bottom left-hand corner on the front of the painting.

Underdrawing

The underdrawing is a preliminary sketch applied directly onto the ground layer, serving as an outline for the composition or parts of it before the paint layers are added. These drawings are often not visible to the naked eye but can be revealed through infrared imaging (IRR and IR-R-IR) if carried out with a carbon-containing material on a light-coloured ground layer. The underdrawings can offer valuable insight into the artist’s creative process and planning, showing how the composition evolved prior to the final painting.

Underpainting

The underpainting is an initial layer of paint applied between the underdrawing and the final paint layers, serving as a foundation for the subsequent application of color. It is often executed in a monochrome palette and helps establish the tonal values and final modelling of the composition.

The brown layer, visible along some of the edges on the reverse and at the bottom left-hand corner at the front, may be either a local underpainting or a layer applied overall as an imprimitura or indeed a ground layer.

Paint layer

Paint layers are applied over the ground layer and are composed of pigments or colorants mixed with a binding medium. Throughout history, artists have used various binders. In the Middle Ages, egg yolk was commonly used in tempera painting for altar pieces, while during the Renaissance, oil became the preferred medium. In modern times, synthetic binders such as those found in acrylic paints are also widely used. In Hammershøi’s time, artists painted mainly with oil paint. The paint layer forms the visible image of the artwork and is often built up in multiple layers to create effects of color, texture, depth, and transparency.

Short description of structure

A densely applied paint layer with a moderate impasto.

Description of brushwork

The paint was applied generally wet-in-wet, with rather short brush strokes in the head and the dark dress, whereas the background paint was applied in slightly longer strokes. The predominant direction of the brush strokes is horizontal, especially in the head and the dress, whereas various directions of the brush strokes are seen in the paint of the background.

Brushes of varying sizes were used. A wider brush was applied in the background and in the dark dress.
Sequence of application
The modelling of the head and the hair is generally from dark to light. On the right-hand side of the figure, the background paint was applied at a late stage in the process to clarify and finalize the outlines of the head and shoulder.
Surface texture
A moderate impasto is found throughout the painting. Imprints in the surface from a frame along the top, bottom and left-hand edges, occurred while the paint was still soft. On the right-hand side the imprint is located on the tacking edge.
Surface gloss
Semi-matt to matt, judging by the appearance on the unvarnished tacking edges.
Colours observed
Black and dark olive-green in the dress and the background paint. Shades of beige, reddish brown and golden brown in the face, with greenish brown, olive-green, auburn and black shadows. Black and dark olive-green in the hair.

Comments

The shifting or displacement in the imprints from an earlier frame in the soft paint at the left- and right-hand sides indicates that the painting was monúnted on a slightly wider stretcher prior to the present one. This supports the assumption suggested by the occurrence of the newspaper remnants on the reverse of the stretcher which continue under the canvas in some areas, indicating that the current stretcher had originally been applied to a different painting. By the present mounting the figure was moved slightly more towards the centre of the composition.

Varnish

A varnish is sometimes applied as a final transparent layer over the dried paint layer to protect the artwork from dust, dirt, and mechanical damage. In addition to providing protection, varnish saturates the colours and evens out the surface gloss. Over time, this layer may yellow, or degrade. Until the 20th century, it was common practice to varnish oil paintings. In Hammershøi’s time, however, oil paintings were not always varnished, and we know that Hammershøi sometimes deliberately chose to leave his works unvarnished.

Frame

The decorative frame serves both protective and aesthetic purposes and can be original to the artwork or added at a later time. Historical frames may provide valuable information about the artwork’s provenance, often through inscriptions, labels, or stamps found on the reverse side.

The frame is older than the painting. Its design is characteristic of Danish gilded frames of the early to mid-nineteenth century. The painting has a different gilded frame in a photograph form an exhibition at Charlottenborg 1896.

With multispectral imaging images of an artwork are captured at different wavelength bands across the electromagnetic spectrum – such as ultraviolet, visible, and infrared light, as well as x-rays. Each band can reveal specific features and uncover or enhance details invisible to the naked eye, offering valuable insights into an artwork – such as the materials used, the presence of underdrawings and hidden layers, alterations made by the artist, and traces of past conservation treatments.

Weave maps

Weave maps are detailed visualisations of the thread patterns in a canvas, created by applying thread counting on high-resolution x-radiographs. These are used for analysing the structure of the canvas and to compare canvases used in different paintings. A comparison between weave maps can sometimes determine if two or more pieces of canvas derive from the same batch and thereby shed light on the place and period in which a painting has been created.

A comprehensive understanding of the materials and techniques used in a painting typically requires the combined application of several analytical methods. Material analysis can provide valuable information about the pigments, colourants, and binding media used in an artwork. Some techniques are non-invasive, i.e. they do not require physical contact with the artwork, while others involve removing a small sample. Elemental analysis using MA-XRF identified pigments, while SEM-EDXS offered insights into the paintings’ ground layers. In selected cases, FORS and FTIR were also employed to identify organic compounds.

MA-XRF

MA-XRF is a method that scans the surface of a painting to produce maps that show the distribution of chemical elements. This method can reveal hidden layers, as well as alterations made by the artist or during past conservation treatments.

Optical microscopy

Optical microscopy uses visible light and lenses to magnify and examine the surface and structure of a painting. When applied to cross sections of paint samples, it allows for detailed observation of a painting’s stratigraphy (layer structure) and pigment particles. It is often employed with various illumination techniques, such as dark field and UV fluorescence, to enhance the analysis. Layer number 1 in the results section below the images refers to the layer at the bottom of the cross section.

SEM-EDXS

SEM-EDXS is a technique that provides highly detailed images at the microscopic level while simultaneously identifying the elemental composition of a sample. It is particularly valuable for studying the stratigraphy of paint cross sections at very fine scales, for the chemical characterisation of pigments, fillers and degradation products, and for detecting trace elements that may indicate very specific materials. Below, the elements listed in parentheses refer to minor elements whose relative abundance is below 10% of the total signal. The F1 map below represents the Pb M line. (Transl): SELF-PORTRAIT. Head and shoulders without hands. Life-size. The head of the 26-year old painter is turned three-quarter face towards the right-hand side of the picture. References, sources and notes

This self portrait was most likely painted on commission by Hammershøi’s patron and biographer Alfred Bramsen (1851-1932). He was a dentist and art collector and one of Hammershøi’s most faithful supporters. Bramsen ordered portraits by different artists to be hung in his own collection at home, and among them this one painted by Hammershøi at the age of 26. In the Hirschsprung Collection Archive there exists some photographs from the home of the Bramsen family in Copenhagen where this and other Hammershøi paintings hang on the walls (ref. Jesper Svenningsen, "Hammershøiana", 2011, p. 29).
